Our Curriculum at St Wulstan's and St Edmund's Catholic Primary School & Nursery

At St Wulstan's and St Edmund's Catholic Primary School we follow the curriulum written by Lancashire Counry Council to ensure that we cover all areas of the National Curriulum with rigor. This enables our pupils to learn all of the skills required to become learners for life.

We teach themes on a two year rolling cycle as we have a number of mixed age classes at our school. This is to ensure that the all children are taught the skills and knowledge of the National Curriculum.

Our Curriculum maximises opportunities for children to:

  • Develop inquisitive minds, a spirit of curiosity and a passion for learning
  • Be equipped with the skills to fully participate in an ever changing world
  • Be respectful and productive members of the community
  • Have high expectations and self-belief to enable them to reach their full potential
  • Reflect on their learning and seek to extend themselves mentally, physically and spiritually and be aspirational
  • Uphold the Catholic ethos of the school whilst respecting their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people
  • Persevere and see any mistake making as a positive opportunity for new learning
  • Develop an understanding and respect for the environment and God’s creation and their role of responsibility for its stewardship
  • Have the courage and confidence to take calculated risks and to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding to any problem-solving task.

The Curriculum Leader at our school is the Deputy Headteacher Miss Warne. Miss Warne is available via appointment if you wish to find out more information about the curriculum.

Reading and Phonics : file (166.9k)

At St Wulstan's and St Edmund's Catholic Primary School we follow the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme of work to teach Phonics in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Each class is taught at least a 20 minute Phonics sessions every day. This is supplimented with Phonics activities in English lessons and during independent learning during Continuous Provision.

Every pupil in the school, including Nursery children, read mainly from the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme which is supplimented by high quality books from other publishers such as Pearson Phonic Bug books.

Children are tracked on the Book Band levels to ensure that they are making good progress in Reading.

Open the link to see how the Book Bands correlate with Age Related Expecations.

For those children who are not working within Age Related Expectations, appropriate interventions take place to ensure including Fast Track Phonics in Year 2.
