Year 1/2

Welcome to Key Stage 1

The Key Stage One phase is split into 2 classes: Year 1/2P and Y1/2 D.

Yr 1/2P is taught by Mrs Parker and our teaching assistants are  Mrs Channing, Mrs Mercy and Miss Booth.

Yr 1/2 D is taught Mrs Day with our teaching assistant Mrs Parkinson.

Mrs Buckley and Mr Fletcher cover PPA on a Wednesday afternoon.

We are very busy in Year 1 and 2, learning many new sounds and spellings in our daily phonics lessons to support reading; lots of new concepts in Maths and learning to structure our sentences in exciting ways in English. We have many practical sessions during the week to help us become independent in our learning.

Home Learning and Spelling

Year 1 and 2 Home Learning

Home Learning

It is evident that when children practise key skills at home, they make better progress than those who do not. Because of this, we will be sending the following homework home. Please support your child and create a routine at home that incorporates home learning.

  • Daily reading and learning phonics sounds and tricky words
  • Weekly spellings. These will be tested weekly
  • Sumdog (maths) at least 45 minutes per week  - This is closely tracked at school.

Reading Books

Home reading books will be sent home every day and children are able to change their books twice a week if they have been read. Please complete the reading diary daily and make it clear when a book has been read. The books children have will often have focus words or sounds in them that the children need to recognise. Please look for these words and sounds throughout the book. When reading, children should be able to read the majority of the words and understand what they have read. Please ask questions as you read to help children develop their understanding of what they are reading.

Thank you,

The Key Stage 1 team
